To Get or Not to Get

I’m going along on a band trip to Oahu this spring. Since Andrea won’t be along, she won’t be able to charge things to her card. She asked if I wanted to use a school card, or if I had a card I wanted to use for mileage points. I don’t. One of the other chaperones has one, so we’re going to use hers.

But it made me think… should I have a credit card that accrues mileage points?

Coincidentally, today in the mail I got two separate card offers from United Airlines. One is kind of a basic mileage card. The other one comes with a bunch of cool perks like access to the members club, and free checked bags.

Then I looked at the fine print. They are free the first year, but have a fee after that. The basic one is $95. The fancy one is $450. That’s not a typo. Four hundred fifty dollars.

Maybe I shouldn’t get a mileage card…

Good grief! That’s insane! When would that ever be a bargain?

I’ve had the same credit card my whole life. No fees, and we earn money toward stuff, but we never actually spend it. That is also a financial mistake, I’m sure.

I have a Gap/Old Navy card. No fees. I pay it off every month. I earn more than $400 in store credit every year. It’s how TnT get their back-to-school clothes. H has one for Scheels. Pays it off monthly. He gets a few hundred a year, too. It’s “free” shoes.

We use only one credit card and it does earn air miles. We have used it for travel quite a bit. I think there is a yearly fee.

Don’t tell Lauren, but we use the Credit card money to buy her iPads. Over the years we’ve had cards that offered “rewards” for things like (in chronological order): Apple computers, vehicles, general stuff. Huh, I thought that list was going to be longer when I started it. I looked recently and there’s a better card than the one we have now for the way we use it. This is the list I was looking at:
