Tilapia and Tape

A few weeks ago, I got some new fish for my classroom aquarium. They must’ve had some kind of disease, because they died right away. Then almost all the other fish in my tank died.

I had been waiting before getting replacement fish, because I wanted the disease to go away or die off or whatever. In the meantime, kids kept saying they wanted to bring this or that kind of fish. I always thanked them, but declined because I wanted to wait a little longer.

Then a couple of weeks ago, a student brought in a couple of tilapia from the pond in his yard. Now my tank has tilapia.

The tilapia seemed to just be settled in when, a couple of days ago, my tank started leaking. Somebody picked at the silicone on one of the corners. Darn. I tried some Flex Seal tape, like on TV, but it was only partially successful.

I leave tonight for the mainland, so I have to decide today whether I will risk the slow leak while I’m gone for two weeks, or if I’ll go through the enormous effort of draining and cleaning the tank.

Yeah, that’s a tough one. Cautious me thinks it should be drained, otherwise the fish might die a slow….. opposite of drowning? I’m not a fish expert, though, so I don’t know.

The only tilapia I know are frozen fillets encased in plastic envelopes from the grocery store, so I envision those swimming in your damaged tank. 🙂

It’s probably too late now but what i will say is that the next new year is…..2020…… does that mean we will all see clearly right away or do we have to wait until we need to use hindsight?
