There are lots of feral chickens on Maui. Some of them live by school. We watch them before and after school – roosters that crow from the tops of the fence… hens that have twelve chicks, then eight, then four…
One of the hens has only one chick to watch out for, and she and her baby come close to our classrooms in the morning. I have started to feed them peanuts, because I always bring peanuts for my snack. They like them.
There is also a rooster with them, but he hardly ever gets any peanuts. He’s kind of skittish, and stays far away.
Awwww….. you have a pet! Please name her Colonel Sanders, and her baby ‘Bucket’.
Just DON’T call the baby “Nugget” – – that won’t end well, I’m sure.
