Nice Words

I did the chapel message at school yesterday. I’ve written about this before, but I have to share again…

After chapel, the classes go back to their rooms, and each student writes the “main idea” on a small piece of paper.

I absolutely loved the fifth graders’ papers. They were all so formal and complimentary. I know their teacher coached them to write that way, but it doesn’t matter. Reading such nice words made me feel good. I stopped by their room later in the day to tell them so. I think they heard me. Hopefully they will be encouraged to share more kind words with other people in the future.

I also have to talk about the card a first grader wrote. Whenever I write a prayer for chapel, I always include at least one sentence asking God to bring peace and healing to anyone who is injured, sick, or troubled. It’s a small thing, but I like to say it, because I have people I pray for, and I want them to be included in the chapel prayer. I think this first grader was thinking of someone too. Not only did she write “please heal the people in the hospital”, but she drew a picture of it on the back. It felt good to know that small sentence in the prayer was appreciated.

    I love this.

Their teacher is a good person, and those kids are wonderful! What a great lesson to teach them – build others up. So cool.

At Lloyd’s school they have a wall of post-its encouraging kids to write something kind that someone did for them. It’s encouraging people to be kind, but also to notice how others showed love to them. Way to go, Lutheran schools!
