Denis is Back

Denis arrived back from his trip to the Philippines on Thursday morning. He had a fun time seeing friends and family. I haven’t heard all the stories yet, because when I’ve gotten back from jury duty all day, I’ve been grumpy and tired.

But he has showed me some of the things he brought back. He brought some food items, like cocoa disks called tablea you dissolve in milk or water and drink, and candy made from durian fruit (which I think tastes really gross. Sorry, Denis.).

He also brought me presents! Yay! He brought me a lose-fitting shirt that is a traditional Philippine favorite. He got the one he gave me at a Muslim shop, so it’s brightly colored. It looks sort of African.

Will I wear this to the mall? Probably not.

He also got me a bottle full of orchid seedlings. The grower had put a layer of gel inside this bottle, along with orchid seeds, and grew them like this. In order for me to get them out, I’ll have to smash the bottle. I can’t wait to try and grow these babies!

The grower said there were around fifty plants here.

*This morning I am at YouthQuake in a hotel north of Baltimore. I wrote this post on Friday. Tomorrow’s post will be delayed until I return home.

YAY!!! Denis is back! Hope you have a wonderful time Denis…
Nice job on the presents for Brad.
Did you have good flights, or did that picture of a plane going down in flames that Brad posted a while back keep popping into your mind?

Bossy comment follows: Don’t break the bottle – buy a bottle cutter and cut the top off. Then you can use it as a vase! Alternately, smash it if you must, but against a boat.

So… how did Denis answer the question in the airport about bringing plant life back into the US?

    (says the pot…)

    • Deanne

      to the kettle, I mean

Were you worried that Dennis would think that you were suggesting that he was traveling with Mary Jane?

        • Lloyd

The slang term for marijuana, I mean.

Welcome home Denis! I hope you had a great trip … hopefully Brad will share some stories with us … along with some of the orchad plants … I mean what are you gonna do with 50 seedlings other than get them going & then give them to friends.

Are these plants like the one in your bathroom?

    Hi there!

I just came across this blog in search of re-potting my Vanda’s. I am so jealous how much Vanda seedlings that Denis have brought you years ago =) How are your Vanda’s doing? Were you successful in all of them?

I am from the Philippines, but lives here in CO. May I ask how was he able to bring those seedling here to US and where he got it from? Maybe I can have someone from the Philippines bring me some when they come here to visit =) Oh goodness! I would love to have that much seedlings especially the ones from the Philippines because they are so beautiful.

    Thank you and take care!!!

Hi Moosh. Actually, none of the vandas survived. I kept thinking they needed high humidity, so I constantly misted them. What it ended up doing was causing them all to turn to mush. 🙁
You can read the story in reverse order here:
      http://bradaptation.com/?s=vandas

Denis said he got the vandas at an orchid shop in the Philippines and then filled out some paperwork before transporting them to the US. He said it can be kind of tricky to get them through sometimes though…
