More Catan

I went to Michele’s house yesterday to teach them how to play Settlers of Catan. She had gotten the game after hearing about what fun we’d had in Nebraska with it. She said that some time when we were off school I should come over and show them how it’s played. I did my best to show them all the nuances, including how to build the tallest structure you can with your unused game pieces while you wait for someone else to take a turn.

I have to say, for a first game, they did really well. The game lasted 2.5 hours. No one was beaten so sadly that they would never be able to show their face again. Our big shortage of the game was wheat. Michele was the road lady, building the longest Longest Road I’ve ever seen. David won, being a big wheeler and dealer. Casey used charm to come in second. I would have won, but you know, I was, er, taking it easy on them. Yeah, that’s it.

After the game, I played Guitar Hero for the first time in my life. I didn’t do too bad, if I do say so for myself. I played “Carry On my Wayward Son”, and didn’t “fail” before the song was over. My left-hand fingers were bruised though. I think I’d need to develop some “Hero callouses” if I played that game with any regularity.

My tower of doom. And David.

First,*sigh* you’ve spread Catan madness to the east coast.

Second, how come there’s no picture of you playing Guitar Hero?!? That’s what your fans want to see!!

    • Deanne

YES!!! We want to see Brad, the Guitar Hero!!!

      • Michele

It was quite a sight! After the game flashed that he reached “Star Power”, there was no stopping him! He even started to dance a little while playing – I should have grabbed his camera, but it was upstairs and I didn’t want to miss one second of his “rockin out”! Next time I snap a photo – promise.

        • Deanne

          YAY!

I wish you would have included a quarter. I have absolutely no idea how big David is.

    • Lauren

      Kinda small next to Goliath.

      (ba-DUM-bum!)
      (That’s a drum sound.)

I think the best line in Brad’s whole post is, “some time when we were off school…”

Why can Brad build such a big tower?

    • Beth

      I believe you meant “SuperBrad”.

Sorry to change topic here, but Brad, what kind of back surgery did you have?

    • Brad

The technical name was Laminectomy/Discectomy between L5 and L6.

It was a herniated disc that was pinching my sciatic nerve for my right leg. They cut off the bulging part and left the rest there. Someday I’ll have to have a fusion or a disc replacement.

      • Karla

Okay – Arron just had that done too. He has 3 herniated discs at L3-4, L4-5 and L5-S1. After much drama last week (that involved my getting thrown up on for Valentine’s Day), he had surgery. His L4-5 had ruptured, giving him symptoms of spinal compression. Now Arron is hanging out at home with a walking stick and a bottle of Vicadin, looking a little bit like a doctor on TV. 😉

        • Brad

Wow! Three discs? His scar must be bigger than mine then. Does he have staples? My staples looked like a zipper in my back. It was so cool! The picture I tried to take didn’t come out though. 🙁

          • Karla

How long is your scar? They just worked on Arron’s ruptured disc, and left the other two alone, so his scar is only about 2 inches long. He was glued shut! It’s just amazing what they can do with super glue. 😉 But I bet those staples looked really cool.

          • Brad

Mine’s about two inches too, but it may be a little lower because the disc they worked on was between L5 and L6. (I have an extra vertebra in my lower back.)

My scar looks like I’ve had a tail removed. I love it!

          • Lauren

Yikes, Karla!!! Give Arron a Vicadin for me, will ya?

          • Karla

That extra vertebrae in your back explains it! I always thought your torso looked incredibly long – now I know it is!! 😉 That’ cool that it looks like you had a tail removed – Arron’s just looks weird and puffy right now. Hopefully it’ll settle into something fun.

Thanks Lauren! I’ll give him a couple Vicadins for you! 😀
