Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

I’m Gonna Make It

My hellebores are blooming. It’s a sign that Spring is coming. My least favorite season is Winter. Fall is my most favorite, followed by Spring, then Summer. But I’m glad Baltimore has a winter. There are a lot of plants I couldn’t grow if there were no Winter. And snow days are nice. But the Early Dark is hard.

Once I see the first flowers of Spring, I know I’ve made it through Winter. Now that the hellebores are blooming, I can look forward to the forsythia, then the daffodils, then the fruit tree blossoms. After that, things will be blooming and growing like crazy and I’ll be refreshed daily by an after-school walk in the garden.

The hellebores poke up through the wreckage of Winter:
There are still robin poop stains on the sidewalk. Stupid robins.

The petals are like leather.

You and my mom are two peas in a pod. She tells me around Christmas, “Only 176 days until I can plant flowers!”

Hooray for surviving the Early Dark! I’m so glad you’re no longer being poisoned by carbon monoxide in the winter – that was a double-whammy.

I can’t believe you have flowers already. We still have wind-chill.

I’m glad those petals are like leather. The high here yesterday was 21. And the low last night was 5. Yes 5 degrees Fahrenheit. (In Celsius it would sound MUCH colder.)

And since you get what we get…well…I’m glad those petals are like leather.

Say it ain’t so, Beth! I already turned off the baseboard heaters at home and wore my “last” winter sweater earlier this week (when it turned out to be 72 degrees) – and if the “wintry mix” comes on a weekend to boot, well, that’s just not right!

We had snow last night, and a high today of 24. I don’t know what the wind chill was, but the flags were whipping around on the flag pole and it was COLD!! It’s coming your way, Carol!

I’m sitting here in the already-baseboard-heat-turned-off-for-the-season living room under a sofa throw for warmth. The good news? That cold front allegedly passes south of us. I can’t feel my nose right now, though, so it can’t be too far south.
