Ash Wednesday

Yesterday was Ash Wednesday. I had chapel. I love to do chapel on special days. It’s so fun to explain their significance and share my excitement. Yesterday was no exception.

We did the imposition of ashes, and I used the technique I learned from Dina all those years ago: burned corks. They make really dark ashes, and you can just use the cork itself to draw the cross. Perfect!

I got them at the craft store, so they are shaped differently.

After chapel, the kids wrote their “What was the big idea” cards. This was my favorite:

I talked about death, because of “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return”. It’s different when you’re just talking with just middle schoolers, or when you’re talking to ages all the way down to preschool. I was pleased to see that this young one heard something good.

That is wonderful! That smart kid really heard you!I am curious about the corks – just burn them straight, then draw with the burnt end? Fascinating! (I haven’t written my post yet, so I’m just going to copy yours.) Thanks!

You have to know: I saw that bowl o’ burnt corks and thought “Why is Brad having chocolate-coated oatmeal cookies on Ash Wednesday?” Really wrong, Carol…

I wish dear hubby used the burnt cork method – the dip-your-finger-in-oil-before-ashes method is messy for the imposer as well as the imposed (citing the ash stains now ont he sweater I wore last night).

God bless the youngin’ who “gets it” so beautifully – and the guy who revealed that truth to him. 🙂
