Eighth Grade Verse

It was time once again for the selection of the eighth grade verse. As always, there were some pretty strange suggestions. But also as always, the kids ended up choosing a great verse. They voted for Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” The person who suggested the verse wrote this version of it, which happens to be the New King James Version. All the other versions say “…Him who strengthens me.” I like that this says “Christ”.

Unlike 2008 and 2007, I didn’t come in on the weekend to do the bulletin board in the hallway. I did it after school on Monday and before school yesterday. It was done in time for the kids to see it when they came in at 7:30am.

Today I’ll be doing a chapel based on their verse. I’m going to talk about various superheroes (with pictures) and where they get their powers and what their weaknesses are. I’ll compare them to us and where we get our power and what our weaknesses are.

I projected and traced a famous superhero. Can you guess who it is?

Bulletin Board: Check

Sorry for another school post, but it’s what I did all day today. Actually, I didn’t do a lot, but it is a crucial part of switching into “school mode”: I got my bulletin board up for the year. It’s based on our school’s theme verse for the year, Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

I always like to choose a verse that compliments the theme verse and use that as the primary thrust for my design. The complementary verse I chose was Hebrews 10:23. That’s the text you can read in the picture below. It made me think of those crazy-tough plants that grow in the tiniest cracks and how they bloom in spite of heat and drought. The bulletin board message: God cracks the toughest situations for us and lets faith grow. “He who promised is faithful.”

I was particularly proud of my idea for the black-on-black words at the bottom. To make them stand out a little, I wiped over the paper with my chalkboard erasers. I’m a clever little monkey.

Can you find the Jeremiah passage?

Eighth Grade Verse

I didn’t really do anything very productive yesterday, so I’ll let my work on Saturday count for the whole weekend.

I went in to school early Saturday morning and put up the bulletin board in the hallway for the eighth grade verse. They chose that perennial favorite of kids, 1 Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you’re young…” I'll have fun telling them the guy that was written to was in his thirties.

I think I actually kind of enjoy doing bulletin boards. But don’t tell anybody.

Can the kids resist drawing faces on the people? We'll see...

First Whole Day

I always start my days back to school by doing the bulletin board in the front of my room. It gets me in the school mindset. I base it on the Bible verse for the year. This year’s Bible verse is from Proverbs.

It was nice to have only one goal yesterday. It was easy to focus and it was attainable. Plus, it left me time to jabber with people. I love jabbering when there’s work to be done.

I decided to go with a rememberable slogan for this year’s bulletin board. I always want to put something there I can refer to often during class. I think this will do it. I also wanted to use some cheery colors. Sometimes especially in January and February I need some bright colors. This bulletin board establishes yellow and orange as my main colors this year. I will use them on all the boards and signs in my room. Ehhxcellent!

The verse is on the path. Part of it says: 'He will make your PATHS straight...' Get it?

Eighth Grade Verse

I’ve been working with the eighth graders to select a class verse for the year. I wanted to take some time with it so they would be thoughtful about the ideas they put forward. First they brainstormed some ideas, then I had them narrow it down in three different votes. They finally selected 1 Corinthians 16:13 “Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.” I think it’s a good choice. Actually, the NIV says “Be men of courage.” I had to resort to a paraphrase version to find a gender neutral statement. It’s the New Living Translation… the daughter of The Living Bible. I hope I don’t go to hell for promoting a paraphrase version. The original Greek says: “Be men.”

Anyway, we have a bulletin board in the hallway that always needs something on it, so I came in over the weekend and did the eighth grade verse on it. Here it is:

The crusader is NOT freehand. :)
