Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Famous Friends

Here is what Karla was talking about in yesterday’s comments: Tress was selected to be a model for a “Women in Military Service” stamp. She sent me some pictures of it back when we were getting caught up on each other. I’m glad I saved them so I could share one with you. Here she is at the Dedication Ceremony Gala in 1997.
I still giggle when I see old friends being all grown up.

While these stamps aren’t available at post offices anymore, you can find them on Ebay.

And I think Karla’s plenty famous herself. She’s been quoted on TV and published on the internet, fer gosh sakes! My biggest claim to fame is being the first person to write about cell phones on the Comsumer Reports website bulletin board.

Dang, that’s cool. You’re plenty famous, Brad! Don’t forget the dozens…. er, ones of fans who frequent your site! 🙂 We’re groupies!

    • Deanne

      I’m a Brad groupie!

  2. Karla

Don’t worry, Brad. It only lasts for 15 minutes and then it’s all over.

But if you get in a fight with Bob Feder, then you can hold a grudge forever!

Which picture in the stamp is based on Tress? And how did/does she serve in the military? And when was Karla quoted on TV? I had no idea I was rubbing elbows with such celebrities!

When I was born, they took a picture of me & my mother for some Nursing Textbook for the hospital. I still have it. Does that count as famous?

    • Deanne

That definitely counts as famous, Peggy!

Theressa was in the airforce, and she was a mechanic. So you’ll NEVER see Tress in a Jiffy Lube–no way!

In this high res image of the stamp (http://www.defenselink.mil/dodcmsshare/newsstoryPhoto/1997-10/hrs_9710061a.jpg), it looks like the airforce is the second to the last, left to right. Although I have to say, I thought the uniform cap looked more like the second from the left.

I must brag on some recent mechanical tutoring that Tress did: my daughter Susana was curious about brakes, how they work and how pads get changed. I had a dinner with Tress shortly following that question, so I told Susana I would ask. Tress gave me like a 30 minute explanation, complete with drawings, of how that all works. I don’t think I’m going to try to change my brake pads any time soon, but Susana was thrilled with the information!

From the info in our High School Alumni Newsletter, Tress is the one on the far right. And just for the record, and I think she lurks around here, it’s completely weird not calling her Bear. That was her HS nickname.

    • Karla

I’ll get a link to you in a bit, Peggy. I gave new mom advice to one of the reporters on the morning news that I watch! 🙂

And I agree, Beth, not calling her Bear is just unnatural!

    • Karla

To Peggy the nursing textbook model – here’s the link to the site where I was mentioned on TV. But first a little background… I’m sure you’ve heard of the cable station WGN that is out of Chicago. They have a local side to it also and a morning news broadcast that is the best. They’re second in the ratings for morning news and made a promo proudly proclaiming it; “We’re #2! Come smell us!”

Okay, so they don’t take things seriously at all. Every morning they have a segment called “Voicemail Frenzy” where they read emails that they got or play voicemail messages that were left. Later they post the segment on their website. So go here: http://wgntv.trb.com/news/local/morningnews/wgntv-worldnow-voicemail-flash,0,2574919.story
and then scroll down to the date of 10/12 and play it.

I’m the one that gave a tip about the baths in the sink.

      • Peggy

Thanks Karla, the TV celebrity … that’s awesome! And that station looks really FUN!! I wish I had heard your advice before I had my first son!

  4. Annette

I think I’ll mail my comment to you

  5. Beth Marshall

Yeah Tress!!! She sent me this news- but CONGRATS again.

Kudos to you Karla, as well.

FYI- I just got a local Hero award in O-Town from Bank of America for my work in the arts.

But if you want something on the fame level- does 3 national commercials and 4 films count?

And Brad- you are FAMOUS and hardly an underachiever.
