Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

The Heat is On

My downstairs has gotten quite cold over the last couple of days. I spend most of my time upstairs in the computer room/Xbox room. I have a space heater there that keeps it nice. But when I want to go downstairs for some food or some TV watching, it’s COLD.

Last year, I just used space heaters to warm my house, but I’ve decided I will turn on my oil heat this winter, at least for a trial period. I have the thermostat turned way down. I’m thinking that maybe just the heater running every once in a while will keep the edge off the frigid temperatures downstairs. And hopefully it won’t cause ludicrous heating oil bills.

We’ll see.

In the meantime, I really enjoy the thunder of the burner spewing flames into the box under the boiler. I also enjoy opening the boiler up and looking inside. It’s like looking into the engine of a steam-powered train.

One, two, Freddie's coming for you...

AAAHH!!! I was all cozy and happy reading your post – until I saw the caption. *jibblie*

Aside from scaring the socks off me, your boiler looks awesome! Much cooler than a boring old furnace. Show the steam train part!!!

Lauren – I thought about you when I was watching the weather last night. Sooooo jealous! Have you all had a snow day yet?

I say get a pellet stove and turn that antique boiler into a planter!

Oh really … we know the real reason you like looking inside? Why don’t you open that other door, huh? Just how long have you been in cahoots with the Klopeks?
“Every few years, ALL my friends move away at once …”, my foot!

My husband would love you, Peggy. The Burbs is one of his top 5 movies of all time. “Nobody knocks off an old man in my neighborhood and gets away with it.”

I’ve never opened the top door. I don’t think it does open. That’s the water part I think. The bottom part is the freaky part. The burner blows atomized oil into that compartment and it burns like CRAZY! After it’s been burning for a while, the whole interior is glowing red.

And now that you mention it, I imagine it would be a hot enough fire for cremation. And a heck of a lot easier than digging a bunch of big, deep holes in my back yard when I’m “gardening”.

      Heh.

But just as soon as you do, PETA will show up at your door and you’ll spend the rest of your living days behind bars…and that would ruin our plans to live to be very old, have apartments across the hall from each other in some assisted living facility, eat oatmeal every night and split a beer before we go to bed…

      Don’t ruin my plans.
