Cheap Heat?

I was going to call this post “The Heat is On”, but that’s what I used last year. It is interesting to note that I’m turning the boiler on about two weeks sooner this year. Is the cold weather coming earlier this year? Perhaps. But what motivates me more is the price of a barrel of oil being $49.62. Gasoline is less than $2. Heating oil must surely be cheaper right now as well.

All this talk of economic meltdown is scary, but I haven’t felt any big difference yet, so crashing oil prices sound good to me. Am I dense, or is the “recession” not as big a deal to little folks as it is to big bankers and stock-trading millionaires? So for now, I’ll just shelve my plans to be a stock-trading millionaire. Instead, I’ll continue to burn my money by running the boiler.

Watch the dollars burn.

Yay for fire! You have radiators, right? Do you want me to come over to your house so I can make them crazy messed-up super-efficient?

the little guys that are having troubles are the ones out of a job. The rest of us will be fine. Also, this oil thing spells deflation, potentially, which is great for the little guy, unless, of course, the little guy owns a store whose stuff won’t sell for more than cost. Hm.

Hopefully all of this nastiness will result in people – and businesses – that are much more cautious about credit. No, it is not OK to take out a 450,000 mortgage on a salary of $50k. And it is not OK to add to that another $50k of credit card debt spent on decorations.

And it’s also not OK to make us pay for that dummy’s mistakes.

OK, I’m off my soapbox now.

Preach it sister! Don’t spend my unconstitutionally confiscated tax dollars on other people’s financial stupidity!

Oh, and that boiler of yours, Brad, freaks me out every time. Are you sure Freddie Kruger doesn’t live in that back basement room? *jibblie*

I should also add, that I do feel absolutely awful about people losing jobs because their bosses are financial idiots. Awful.

Heh. Beth, we must be related. While you were posting your comment, I was writing this:

        Amen, sister!

I wrote and re-wrote this post several times because at first I raved like a crazy man about the trillion dollar bailout and the taxes I pay and the stupid government.

I like all the helpful hints that newspeople are giving us about saving money. Like using coupons and turning your heat down at night. Genius! I would have never thought of that without them!

    • Michele

The fastest growing business right now is the coupon business! Go figure!

      • Deanne

I stopped getting the paper for the coupons when I realized they were mostly new things and packaged foods. They never have a coupon for meat. Or veggies. Or flour. So I’ve discovered places that are generally cheaper, and I stick with them. I don’t have time for the paper, anyway.

        • Michele

No buddy! Go online! It’s the online coupon business that’s so successful.

You could save some money if you could use the very fires of hell to heat your home.

    • Brad

That’s what keeps me warm inside.

        hehehe

[There was something in Beth’s post about people losing their jobs (or, say, their short-lived lateral moves into far better administrative positions) due to the idiocy of their superiors that struck a familiar chord. Can’t quite figure out why that sounded so familiar to me…]

We just flipped the breakers for our baseboard heaters about a week ago. Our house has settled so noticeably toward the east side that the windows and doors gap at points and with that cold wind of late, well… BGE loves us; baseboard electric heat ain’t cheap, but at least we never have to deal with firey monsters in our basement, potential gas explosions, carbon monoxide poisoning, etc. It’s all good. Hard to roast marshmallows over, but still good.

This boiler is vintage FAB. I have been behind on all the blogs etc…very busy.
The main reason I am posting is to say HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!
Love ya! So good to see everyone!
