Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Summer in January

The garden mail order catalogs are coming fast and furious. I’ve got a pile of them on the floor next to my bed. I love looking at them before sleeping. I haven’t formulated any concrete plans for plantings in the spring, but I’ve been highly interested in dwarf fruit trees lately. I already have a cherry tree, though it hasn’t bloomed for me yet. I planted a tiny peach tree last April. I’m thinking about adding some apples to my miniature orchard as well. Miller Nurseries, one of my favorite places for fruit gardening supplies, offers some trees that have almost no branches. The apples kind of just grow from the trunk. I’m intrigued.

Among the catalogs pictured below are many favorites. Burpee Seeds is an old standard. Looking at the catalog from Heronswood is like looking at pictures of fine jewelry… the plants are rare and beautiful. But of course my favorite place of all is the one I’ve mentioned many times and even visitedPlant Delights Nursery. The catalog is full of humor and the plants are amazing. I never read that catalog all at once… I like to make it last.

Sweet dreams of spring.

I’m glad you posted a picture of those no-branch apple trees. I was having a hard time picturing them before. They’re crazy-cool!

Does that catalog really say, “Yes, I’m clay?”

Never mind – I clicked the link. Funny!

And yea, that apple tree is wiggy! (I was gonna say “crazy-cool”, but it was already taken)

I love having hobby-stuff beside my bed. It’s very entertaining before sleeping, but not enough to keep me awake very long. Unlike a good book, which sometimes keeps me up all night!

    It’s not quite the same, but . . .

I thought I wrote a post like this last year, but I didn’t go looking for it. I wonder if it means anything that this year’s post is six and a half weeks earlier than last year’s…

I never cared much for spring. Summer-yes, but spring is so rainy.

And I love the winter trees! Their black sillouettes against the winter sky are breathtaking. I usually catch the sun rising on my way to work & the sun setting on my way home. If the trees had leaves on them, you’d miss all the fabulous colors of winter!
