A Concert

Each year, the school from the church where I direct handbells has a concert. The school has two groups: beginner and advanced. They invite our adult group to play as well. It’s always a fun night. The beginners always impress me with how well they’ve learned starting from zero. And the advanced group plays with such expression. It’s also very fun to watch their faces as they play. The kids are always concentrating so hard it shows in their face. And they often mouth the counts. It’s cute.

This year’s concert was last night. Our adult group played well. Cindy from school joined us for two weeks to stand in for a regular member who was ill. Cindy is awesome! We played three pieces. The big challenge this year was changing time signatures. One song went from 6/8 to 3/4 time. I kept saying we were going from duple to triple, but the handbell players kept doubting “duple” was a word. 561,000 pages on Google agree with me, so I must be right.

The concert took about an hour and five minutes. I was home by 8:15. Nice.

They are adorable!!! I love how you can barely see the little girl on the left.

We have a nap cd that changes from 6/8 to 3/4 for a couple of measures. It really throws off their sleeping.

Where was their director? Were they just winging it?

Man. They must really be good.

The director was standing in the aisle. The picture only shows half of the group.

Handbell players don’t look at the director anyway. All the work is done in practice. In performance, the director is just there for moral support.

From what I’ve seen it’s that way with all instrumental groups. I like our jazz band director because he just says something about the piece, gets them started and walks of snapping his fingers.

Dang…I forgot about the concert. I am always amazed at how well the kids do….and well, I just love all the bell groups. Duple dang!
