The newest fad amongst our students is rubber bands shaped like animals (and other things). At first I saw one or two, but now they’re all over. I see them mostly in the sixth grade, but there are some in seventh as well. It’s nice because since they don’t want to lose the bands, they don’t shoot them across the room. Mostly, people are just wearing them as bracelets. They take them off to lay them out on the desktop and admire them, but then they put them back on. It’s a quiet and conflict-free fad right now. I’ve seen a little trading going on, but that’s about it.
Yesterday I asked someone if I could take a picture of the ones he was wearing on his wrist. He spread them out for me:
I like the dinosaurs quite a bit, but I’m stumped about the green one.
The light green one is a bunny.
When I first looked at the green one, I thought of Andy Capp. But my brain has been known to do weird things.

As frightened as this makes me – I can see where you’d see Andy Capp in the green one! [What does that say about me, I wonder…]
I think the purple one is an amoeba.
The purple one is a thing of grapes. How is that called? A gaggle?
No, it’s definately an amoeba.
I think I would like a set of those to lay out on my desk and admire, too.
So pretty…
One of my students gave me a giraffe bracelet earlier this week because she knows I collect them. I’ve worn it all week. I’m cool like that!
Do I see a blue dinosaur trying to eat a red scaredy cat??
(Ugh – the longer I look at that couple, the less “socially acceptable” their relative posture becomes. Shades of 8th grade s** class?!)
…and what’s that bus doing in pink anyway? That’s just wrong!
Those are called Silly Bandz. ALL the girls in my class like them. (I have 14 girls in my class!)
