Filipino Brunch

Happy Birthday, Lloyd! Yay!

A trip to New York with Denis often means a stop at a Filipino restaurant, and yesterday was no different. It’s been for dinner before, but this time it was for lunch/brunch. My expectations for breakfast foods kind of fall to the sweet side of things. Yes, eggs and bacon and sausage are savory… but there are so many other sweets: cereal, waffles, pancakes, french toast, oatmeal, grits, toast (with jelly). I was craving sweet, but the menu only had savory: tocino (pork), tapa (beef), eggs, rice.

So I ordered dessert. I got something called champurrado. It’s kind of like chocolate oatmeal, but it’s actually made with rice, and it’s more soupy than oatmeal. It is warm and tasty and really hit the spot.

I didn’t take a picture of the champurrado because I was distracted by the drink Denis ordered. He wanted a soda, but the restaurant was kind of fancy and only offered a brand called “Dry”. It only came in weird flavors. Denis ordered cucumber flavor. He let me taste it. It was pretty good. I’ve had cucumber water before and liked it. This was cucumber water with fizz and sugar. I think the sweetness might have turned me off of drinking a whole bottle, but a sip was very interesting.

Fizzy cucumber.

Hmmmm…. it seems like a Filipino restaurant would be a really good place to eat if you were on a gluten-free diet. Interesting…..

As far as breakfast, the perfect breakfast has a balance of sweet and savory: bacon, eggs, toast (no jelly), pancake/french toast/waffle, coffee & juice….. mmmmmm……. (These frosted mini-wheats are not hitting the spot.)

Tip #1: Sounds like you might enjoy the weekend brunch at the Hilton Garden Inn on Campbell Blvd. $10.95 buffet with most of the items you listed above, wonderful servers and chefs, great ambiance – while we don’t own stock in the company, we are regulars there.
Tip #2: Always list birthday announcements first, as you did above. I would have missed Lloyd’s natal anniversary were it lost in the food report. Good move. And happy day, sir – many more!

Chocolate ricemeal?! Hmmm…sounds like a stocking stuffer (uncooked) for someone at our house (ahem). I’ll suggest the dear husband trek down to the Filipino grocery and see if he can find a box or bag thereof before 12/25…

Q.: How does sparkling cucumber water compare with, say, pumpkin pie soda? Inquiring minds want to know…

At first I thought your caption said, Fuzzy cucumber. (Having grown several fuzzy cucumbers in my frig, I would not recommend them.)

Yay for trying new things! You are very brave. I’m having snickerdoodles & coffee right now…..Mmmmm.

And HAPPY BIRTHDAY LLOYD! I hope you have a fun, delicious day!
