Houseplants

My school’s campus is full of houseplants – houseplants that are growing in the ground. To be accurate, I should say Maui is full of houseplants that are growing in the ground. Many of the plants at school are ones I’ve actually had in my house in Baltimore.

A CROTON AND A BIRD OF PARADISE. You can see my old bird of paradise HERE.

Crotons are hard to grow inside.

A tree that looks like a NORFOLK ISLAND PINE. I have no pictures of the one I grew. I thought I remembered Lauren posting about one, but I couldn’t find that post either.

I took a bottom up shot to show the gigantic size.

A FICUS TREE. It is WAY bigger than any ficus I have seen. You can see mine in the edge of the picture in THIS post.

It's so big!

A HIBISCUS. These are growing everywhere. It is the state flower of Hawaii. I have grown many hibiscus plants in the past THIS one was my favorite.

This is right outside my classroom.

It’s so lush! It’s almost like a tropical parad…… wait. It is. Is it incredibly bizarre walking around and seeing these?

Your past posts are hilarious! I like the one where you’re going to buy bug poisons for bugmageddon.

    How is your sore throat?

    • Brad

My throat is feeling better. Now all I have is a weird dry itch that makes me cough. I’m taking it as a good sign.

    I LOVE

I LOVE that last picture! How gorgeous!! What a great combination of colors. I would love to have that outside of my house or office! Oh well, at least I can have it in my computer.

I love the hibiscus flower! I need to get more…..can I plant them in the ground in MD? Also, are there any banana trees in Hawaii? The kind like you have.

    • Brad

You can plant hibiscus plants in the ground in Maryland, but they wouldn’t grow any faster than if they were in a pot. And, of course, they would die in winter.

There are banana trees here, but not as many as I expected. They can look messy sometimes, so I think people choose other things to landscape with.

I have some perennial hibiscus that i can give you Peggy!

        I would love that!!

When I made my journal & album of our trip to Hawaii last year, I asked Marcia if I should make an album with just the flowers that I took pictures of. She said that I should put the flower pics with the day and where I was visiting so that when people read my journal and looked at my pictures, they would know that THE FLOWERS were EVERYWHERE!! Hawaii has to be the most scenic beautiful place that I’ve visited!
Each place overseas that I’ve been blessed to travel to (thanks to your father) has been beautiful in is’t own right!! Thanks, Ron!! <3

You must be in plant heaven Brad! I am watching the banana trees that you gave me to see if they made it through the winter. If they did I’m sure there are some babies for Peggy. The daffodils and pitcher plants you gave me a few years ago are doing well. Where am I going to get all those exotic plants you used to dig out of your garden? I guess I’ll have to actually buy some myself unless you want to bring some back to Maryland….

I remember the first time I went to Florida and I could not get over the fact that houseplants grow outside, all year, everywhere. The variety must be amazing. I am picturing a plant journal for you. You should start documenting now. Begin.
