My air bed has been getting wider the last few days. I already gave up trying to keep a fitted sheet on it, but it was getting ridiculous. It looked like a block of soft cheese that had gotten too warm. Last night, as I was giving my bed the customary 30 seconds of inflation before bed, there was kind of a loud noise, and the side of the bed popped out even farther. As far as I could tell, it was an internal problem. But the bed still seemed fully inflated and firm, so I went to sleep.
I woke up at 11:30 in a saggy trench. The bed was deflating. Rather than try to figure it out, I just took my sheets and went to sleep on the living room floor. I slept well enough, but I really ached in the morning. I would need a new bed.
I faced a conundrum. Would I spend $130 on another Aerobed from Costco, or would I try a cheaper alternative? I only need the bed for about a month, and I don’t exactly have a lot of money to throw around right now.
As it turns out, my decision was made for me. Costco didn’t have any Aerobeds, and Kmart had an $80 bed on sale for $45. It was a no-brainer.
‘…a saggy trench’ – I like that phrase so much. It is an apt description in so many ways.
Sorry about the bed deflating, but what a great thing that K-Mart came through with a deal! I read a website by a crazy minimalist camping guy about sleeping on the floor and I thought of you and how you like firm mattresses. http://paleoalltheway.com/sleepergonomics/
Your new bed looks far classier – masculine – adventurous even. One might even be tempted to jump up and down on it! (But don’t – it has to last another month.)
Speaking of which…have you made your homeward travel plans yet? NE first or MD? Inquiring minds want to know!
I keep meaning to look at airfare prices. I would think it will be cheaper to go from here to Nebraska to Maryland. That would mean a mid or late June arrival in Nebraska, and an early July arrival in Baltimore. If I don’t have a teaching job lined up by then, I will need to find some other kind of job pretty quickly.
