Na Kaikunane

Adam (one of my co-workers) has been in a program at the Institute of Hawaiian Music at UH Maui. Last night was a concert to celebrate the end of the program. It was like his senior recital. All eleven people from the program were there, and they all performed. It was mesmerizing. I loved it.

For the last songs of the concert, the whole class was on the stage. They were joined by “Uncle George”, a senior member of the Hawaiian music staff, who was a mentor to all of them, and who is also probably the most famous Hawaiian music person on Maui.

They sounded great.

They sounded great.

My favorite part of the program was the beginning. Adam and four of his classmates formed a band they call “Na Kaikunane”. It means little brothers (of a big sister). They chose that name because one of their other classmates is a woman that’s older than all of them.

They were AMAZING! I could have listened to them all night long. They do not have a CD yet, but I’m going to beg Adam to make one. They played a song I hear on the radio every morning called “Olinda Road”. I love it. I made a recording of Na Kaikunane playing. I only got a small clip, but it still shows how good they are. And it reminds me of what a great time I had watching them. In the video below, Adam is second from the left.

Very cool! They ARE quite good!!

Think of all the neat memories you are making every day just by experiencing the people, culture, foods, flora, fauna, and MUSIC of that area. Will you become a guest speaker around the Bmore area now, sharing slides and videos of your time spent on the island (for a small fee, of course 😉 )? It’s a thought…

That was incredible! Way to go, Adam and Little Brothers! (There’s no way I could type that word correctly.) The shirts are fantastic, as well!

That sounded great! I would want to hear more of that!

My “Na Kaikunane” can’t play like that! The 4 of them used to try singing a little barbershop once in a while and they all dabbled in an instrument when they were young. But they aren’t stage worthy … only TV commercial worthy:)

Are you stocking up on Hawaiian shirts? Then you and Lloyd can form your own band.
