We went up to the summit of Haleakala yesterday. We decided we were going to hike into the crater area a little. First we stopped to see the blooming silversword. Since the wind wasn’t blowing, it was easier to smell the flowers. They smelled like honey.
There are long trails into the crater. Since the crater area is quite large, we decided to walk down one for a while, then turn around and come back.
The trail was completely devoid of anything but rock. It was fascinating.
After we got as far as we were going to go, I realized I had to go to the bathroom. Yikes! It was a race to get to the top. The thin air and steep trail were fighting against an insistent bladder. I made it.
We drove back down the volcano and stopped at Fatburger for lunch. I decided to try an egg on my burger. I had egg, bacon, and cheese. It was one of the most delicious foods I’ve had in recent memory. It was a perfect blend of fats and flavors.
All that burger needs is juice and toast to make it complete.
How brave of you to climb around a volcano! Too bad you didn’t bring along some vinegar and baking soda for an ironic photo. 😉
“What a beautiful sight” made me giggle – I suppose you intended that juxtaposition of restroom and overlook. And I second anything Lauren already posted. And you must be dropping pounds daily with all this hiking, no?
I guess that is the hazard of hiking in a volcano; no trees to help a guy out. Do you have any idea how many miles it is to the bottom?
It is 11 miles to the other rim and I’m guessing about 3 miles to the bottom.
that would be a hike!
Wait. There’s no Tramcar to bring you back up? Your legs must have the strength of 10 men or 20 by now.
And did you
stealcollect any cool lava rocks or minerals while on your hike in the crater?
