Welcome to Brad's online memory archives.

Greener

After working in my classroom a little yesterday, I stopped at Debbie’s house. She had offered some aquarium plants for my new tank. Thanks, Debbie! I’m glad to get them for two reasons:
1) They will add some interest to my empty-ish tank
2) The are probably covered with beneficial bacteria, which will help my tank cycle more quickly

She had java moss and java ferns, both of which are easy to grow, and spread quickly. I didn’t have the inclination to do any serious aquascaping last night, so I just dumped the plants in. I hope to get to it sometime this weekend – though truth be told, the plants would be just as happy to float freely in the tank.

The fish seem to like the plants.

That is crazy that they can just float there. So, if plants take oxygen and convert it to carbon dioxide, do underwater plants get little bubbles on their surface that break free later, or is it as tiny as the oxygen molecules? I guess I’m asking about air build-up.

I think the oxygen released starts out small and can become bigger. Ive seen small bubbles on leaves. I’ve also cut or broken some stems of aquarium plants and seen bubbles slowly leak from the cut end.

Glad to recycle your moss back to you and share my plants! Have fun aquascaping this weekend!
