No Story

Yesterday was post-musical cleanup day. Most of the cleaning was done in the sanctuary of the church. One of the tasks I was given was to check the pews in the balcony for any programs that people might have left behind. I was excited because I had never been in the balcony. This was my very first time!

Check out that rose window!

I had to inspect the stained glass window up close while I was up there. When I did, I was surprised to see lots of dead flies. I mean, it was a LOT. But when I looked closer,I saw that they were honey bees. Hundreds and hundreds of honey bees.

Every sill was like this, and the floor was covered.

I wondered what had happened, so I asked around. No one knew, not even the long-timers. I was hoping for a story about the honey bee swarm of ’02, or something like that. No one had any remembrance. Did the bees swarm up there and no one ever saw them? Did they have a hive in the wall and some individual church member called an exterminator and that was that? I guess I’ll never know.

[Didn’t you take an apiarist course a few years back – no clues from that?]

How sad – we need our honey bees!! So will this group of bodies receive a respectful repose, or just be swept into the dust bin..or are they still up there?!

That does seem odd – must be a mini hive somewhere, wouldn’t you think? Maybe in the organ pipes?! (Musical bees – could be worse!)

..oh, and congrats on your first solo venture into the balcony. [If you were asked to do that at Holy Cross, you’d trip over boxes, wires, folding chairs – haven’t used it in an eon because our music person plays the electronic keyboard only these days. Sigh.]

Maybe they thought that was a giant flower and that they hit the jackpot. Poor little bees – they have to be in heaven now. I think that’s a rule.
