A Friend Indeed

I helped some friends move yesterday. I would have called them Denis’ friends, but once you help people move, they are by definition friends of yours, right? “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”

This is Marjorie (who had baby Gabriel in February) and her family: Gabriel’s daddy and his twin boys. They had been living in a one-bedroom apartment, and since the boys moved up from Texas, that apartment was really cramped. Their new place is a two-bedroom and is large and beautiful. I love living in my house, but I have to say that apartment living really appeals to me: lots of people around… layout maximized for convenience… a clubhouse and pool…

So bright and airy...

So bright and airy…

The moving went really well. The most challenging part of the day was trying to get the twins to talk to me. They’re in eighth grade, so I should be able to connect with them. They seem really shy though. I did get them to smile a few times, but it seems like they either weren’t very comfortable speaking English, or they weren’t very comfortable speaking to a non-Filipino. But now that I’m a friend of the family, I’ll probably have plenty of other chances to talk with them.

That was nice of you to help them move! Did you load up your truck? There are two kinds of people in the world: those who have a truck, and those who need to borrow a truck.

I think apartment living is appealing, too. Someone else takes care of all the outside stuff – shoveling, mowing, landscaping. Although, if you lived there, you could be the garden guy and get free rent!
