Old Music

I am teaching Music this year, which means a lot of kids are singing, which means I need something for them to sing. I’ve been using the children’s hymnal from CPH and some other praise songs, but I think I should teach them some choir pieces too.

I just so happen to have some choir pieces. There are at least two boxes in my basement that have single copies of choir music in them. These are pieces that I kept for some reason. I dug one of the boxes out yesterday and went through it looking for suitable children’s choir pieces. I found some good prospects.

What was really interesting was how fun it was to play through those pieces. It has been a long time since I led children’s choir, but some old familiar good feelings built up while I was searching through those songs. Maybe I’ll try to find a good old-fashioned music reading session that’s sponsored by a music store or music publisher. Surely they still do those, don’t they?

One down, one or more to go.

Well, you really are the jack-of-all-trades, aren’t you? Music, religion, computers, literature, life skills, gardening and home repair on the side….. are you sure you’re not just a really tall elf? Is there a tree in your yard full of baking equipment?

Yea, you’re great at all that….but can you cross your eyes & pull just one out to look straight? Well… can ‘ya, punk?

Check out this offering from CPH. There are two different books, and both are fantastic! I’ve used them with children’s choirs and adult choirs. There is a melody and counter-melody to each piece. Easy to learn and sounds beautiful. The accompaniment is very manageable, and there are even songs that use Orff and other rhythm instruments. I highly recommend. (No, I’m not being compensated for this review. However, I wish I was.)

Thanks for the suggestion! I want to do some Orff stuff with the kids, but my college Orff class was a long time ago. I started doing a little solfege with the 2nd and 3rd graders. I’m curious to see how they take to it.
