Some Garden Time

I put another post on the porch yesterday, but I’m still not ready to call it Day Eleven. Next time I do some work, it will be to plant some posts in the ground with cement footings. After I get them in, I’ll show pictures of the other posts as well. I got an email last night that said my railings will be delivered on Monday. I thought they weren’t coming until the 15th. I’m glad they’ll be here sooner.

Yesterday it was outright cool outside. In the evening I decided to cook some hot dogs and marshmallows at the fire pit. It was nice to spend some time in the garden. I’ve been kind of neglecting it lately.

I was excited to see that my sensitive plant was blooming. The flower looks like something from Dr. Seuss.

The leaves were already closed because it was getting dark.

The banana trees were looking very leafy. I like to keep the leaves trimmed off the trunks so they look more tree-like. It’s really easy to chop leaves off with a knife, so I did it while I waited for some good cooking embers to develop in the fire pit.

BEFORE:

They really grow fast in the heat of August.

AFTER:

I usually chop out all of the babies, but I decided to leave them this time.

The hot dogs and marshmallows were delicious! While I cooked them, I sat on a chair my mom and dad gave me. It’s perfect for fire pit cooking!

It's an old tractor seat.

I agree that the plant looks like something from Dr. Seuss. “I meant what I said and I said what I meant. An elephant’s faithful one-hundred percent!”

“I usually chop out all of the babies, but I decided to leave them this time.” You’re like the Pharaoh of banana trees.

That tractor seat is perfect for the fire! That fire pit is the go-to place of the summer. 🙂

Wow! A banana tree! Interesting…how does it fare in the winter?

It’s a more cold-hardy variety from Japan. It’s called musa basjoo, or Japanese fiber banana. It’s not edible. But I’ve never seen it fruit or bloom. It dies to the roots each winter. The roots survive, and I get new trees every summer. 🙂

Is that a Rose of Sharon blooming off to the side? Lovely!

It’s a hardy hibiscus, which is almost the same thing. They’re both in the hibiscus family. My particular variety is called ‘Kopper King’.
