Driving to California: Arrival

I’ve arrived in California! Woo hoo! I was here overnight, but today, I will be in Maui for most of my waking hours. I arrive at 9:17am Maui time.

My drive yesterday was short but beautiful. The mountain scenery was staggeringly beautiful. I tried to get a picture, but failed. This isn’t really representative:

The landscape changed as I continued on. I was fascinated by this particular stretch. The uniform brown grass and green trees made it look like a model train landscape.

Driving through the Bay Area was cool. At one point, I skirted the water. I could see downtown San Francisco across the way. I couldn’t take a picture of it though. Too much traffic.

Dropping my truck off was interesting. After all the fuss I made about cleaning my truck, they seemed hardly to look at it. It was quickly approved and put in line to wait. The check-in people laughed when I confirmed that it was a Toyota Tacoma. They said that was the most frequently sent model to Hawaii.

The guy at the entrance to the drop off said I really should use uber to get to my hotel. I decided to download the app and take my first uber trip. It was fun. My driver Sisay was from Ethiopia. He is very involved in his Christian church. When I talked about my job, he became very interested in Lutheran schools for his younger brothers. He asked if we could exchange numbers. When I get to Maui, I hope to put him in touch with Lutheran schools in the Bay Area.

Do they organize the cars by color?

I am praying for a safe flight and smooth transition to your new home.

Heh. I almost commented about that too. Could that be some trick of the digital zoom when I was taking the picture? I don’t remember all the cars being white.

A whites only line? Shame on you California!

And your drive looks absolutely fantastic! I’d love to see all those views!

One more stop, and you’re home! Enjoy!

I am so glad you got there safely! I am also praying for a safe and uneventful flight. 🙂

Your scenery was much more beautiful than ours, but think about the beauty to come!

Kept thinking about and praying for you driving through the states we keep seeing on the news that seem to be burning to a crisp with wildfires. Seems you and the truck made it in one piece, though – praise God! Hope the first Uber ride went well and can be of further assistance once you land in the Aloha State. Now all I have to pray about for you is no strikes by nuclear missiles from North Korea, no political embroilments (the state of Hawaii has been sticking its neck out a lot lately…), no violent volcanic eruptions … guess I’ll still be on my knees for a while then. 😉 God’s peace and joy in this new adventure!!
