A Day with the Family

Today after church we had a big family dinner. Mom made fried chicken and we all sat around an ‘L’ shaped table. Brent and Daniel weren’t there because they’re on a four day camping trip for Boy Scouts. Lloyd wasn’t there because he’s at a nerd convention computer convention.

After dinner, we all tried to stay awake while sitting in front of the TV.

In the evening, we went to work on the Concordia College float for the Fourth of July parade on Friday. It was my first exposure to such a thing. It was really interesting. Lauren showed her mad skilz by building an armature for the chicken wire cross. Then we stuffed tissue paper into the chicken wire. There’s more stuffing to be done, but it started to get dark so we went home.

Here’s the beginning of the process. During the parade, I’ll try to get a good shot of the float as it goes by.

L to R: Lauren, Mom, two people whose names I don\'t remember, and Rachel (my niece).

We had to do a float for a parade in Girl Scouts, and we just threw a tent on a flatbed. I have no chicken wire skills! Go Lauren!

I was a little surprised that we were building the actual items. I thought they wer done and we were just going there to stuff the tissue paper. I had to hold back my controlling nature quite a lot – making ‘suggestions’ rather than saying, “Everybody out! I’ll call you when it’s done.”

I worked on the float for three years in a row…it really is kinda fun. 😀

I remember getting wrangled into helping two or three times. I don’t remember the fun though. I’m sure it was. Wasn’t it just four of us that one year?

I remember walking in the parade as well. I thought I wouldn’t like that but it was ok. It was fun throwing candy at people when they weren’t expecting it, especially the drunk people.

Did you ever help out with the float for St Paul’s grade school? I wish I had a quarter for every tissue paper flower I’ve made in my lifetime.

        • Beth

Indeed. Thorwing the candy was the best. 😀

And yes, that one year it was just you, me, Jen and ??? Chara?

Are you kidding me Karla? I think it was a requirement for everyone to fill a trash bag every night with flowers.

I also had to help with our 4-H float every year. Talk about burnout. I didn’t like it at all.

The only good float I can think of has ice cream in it…does the CUNE float have ice cream in it? Root beer on top maybe?!

For some reason I recall that I had to help with a Luther North homecoming parade float one year in the late ’70’s when I taught there. Forget which group or how I got wrangled into it, but in short if I never stuff another wad of tissue into another hole in chicken wire it’ll be too soon.

Like I said – only good float’s a deadone with ice cream in it. Enjoy, all!
