Field Trip – American Visionary Art Museum

First, a Dad update: Yesterday, my dad had laproscopic cardiac ablation done. It’s a routine procedure, but it’s a big deal: it’s heart surgery. He came through the surgery well, and is recovering. Thank you to those of you that prayed for him… please pray for continuing recovery. And pray for my mom and sister… they were up all night last night visiting him and talking to him while he slept and squeezing his hands.

Yesterday was officially my Last Day Of Summer. I decided I should go on another Field Trip. This time, I went to the American Visionary Art Museum. It’s in downtown Baltimore, literally right next to Federal Hill. I’ve wanted to go there for a while because I was curious about it.

The idea is that the art in this museum is not from trained artists. It’s folk art. The current theme is “What Makes us Laugh”. There was a lot of funny stuff. I smiled a lot, and more than once I laughed out loud. But I’m afraid I couldn’t properly appreciate the art. Maybe someone with more of a trained eye would appreciate it better. It all looked a little rough to me. I’m used to beautiful representations of nature or paintings that look like photographs. This art was more ‘avant garde’ or something.

Still, it was a fun visit, even if it did cost $16. And if you’re ever looking for some weird stuff to buy, the gift shop there is just the place.

The front door was very sparkly.

Figured the sparkly entrance would grab your attention! (The bus and motorcycle are part of the building/display then? That’s different. A former shop customer’s new neighbor just ran her car through her garage door and severed a gas main in the process – now I guess she can call that accident “art”, too?)

What did I just read in the City Paper* about a special event/display/speaker/somethingortheother at the AVAM having to do with their laughter theme? Daggum it – I figured I wasn’t going so my brain must have deleted that file…did you notice anything in particular that seemed additional or out of the ordinary? (“How could I tell?”) …never mind…

    * not a subscriber; just available where we went to eat Friday evening…

hehe…I had to hunt for the motorcycle. Of course, I was looking on the ground for it!

Continued prayers for your Dad & family……

You didn’t take enough pictures of the funny stuff!

    Pretty door.

They wouldn’t let me take pictures inside. There were signs all over that said “No Photography”.

What if you said you were just holding a piece of art that looked like a camera? 😉

I’m so glad to hear about your dad. We prayed for him at the all-staff ministry meeting, and I’m so glad to hear that he’s doing well.

Hehe… that might have worked at this museum. There were a lot of strange installations…
