Confirmed Californian

On Tuesday, I discovered that the Maui DMV had emailed the document I needed to get my California drivers license, so I headed to the California DMV immediately. It was later in the day, but I had an hour and a half before they closed, so things should have been ok. The line was even short!

I was freakishly nervous, like I always am with public servants. They have so much power… if I do anything to cross them, BAM! No license, and my life is ruined…

But in spite of my nervousness, things went well …until it was time for me to take the written test. They said I didn’t have enough time to finish because the place was closing down in an hour. Dang.

So yesterday I went back to take the test. I saw why they thought it would take an hour to take a forty question test:

There was a line for the testing. It did take longer than an hour.

But I passed! Woo hoo! I have my California drivers license! …or a paper that says I have a license. The card will come in two to three weeks.

Oh. My. lan. ta. That is such a headache of a process! Fifteen service windows and it’s still such a long line? How many days – no, weeks – has this been? However….. it’s done! Whew!

(I hope the renewal process can be done online.)

    You are not alone.

This saga brought back a memory of my first re-licensing in St. Louis with my first call. …shiver…I did not pass the in-the-vehicle-with-a-tester part the first time (something silly about not signalling properly before leaving a parallel parking slot or something, but I digress) and that made me really nervous to go back, too. Yet, all was well at the second attempt. Yea, us!

(For a moment I thought you were going to reveal that Kramer was there taking the written test again with you. “What does a yellow light mean?” Classic stuff… 😉 )
