Fun and Food

Yesterday morning was the first middle school basketball game of the season. Our school is small, so the team is co-ed. We played at Seabury Hall school in Makawao. It’s in the “upcountry”. That is, it’s on the slopes of the volcano, Haleakala. The campus is beautiful. The basketball league we play in is kind of laid back… there is no keeping of scores or stats. The kids just play. It was interesting, and I have to say, a little confusing. I just so happened to bump into the A.D. of Seabury, and he told the story of this arrangement. He said they tried keeping track of the scores once, and the crowd turned into something ugly. From then on, the schools have kept this arrangement, and it’s really worked for them.
Our team is in the bright yellow shirts. And the red shirt.

One of the families had made a stop in nearby Makawao at the Komoda Donut Shop. It is famous around here for its delicious donuts. They gave me some. The fame is well-earned. They were amazing!
I ate them as we walked around the campus after the game.

After the game, I stopped by the Swap Meet that happens every Saturday morning on the college campus in Kahului. I was hoping to find Juila, my former student from Seattle. She said she sells jewelry there. I thought it would be more like a flea market, but it’s more of an arts and crafts sale. And there is fresh produce. I would have gotten some produce, but I was there late, so everything was in short supply. I did not find Julia. I don’t know it that’s because she wasn’t there or because I didn’t look hard enough.
I thought it looked funny as you approached it from this angle.

After all that, I went back to my apartment and fell asleep. When I woke up, I was hungry. I walked over to the beach and talked with Lloyd and Lauren a little. Lloyd searched the internet and found a rotisserie chicken restaurant in walking distance. It was funny when I got there, because it was a mobile grill trailer. But there was nothing funny about the food. It was delicious.
It came with rice and corn. I said no to the rice, so they gave me extra corn.

*How cool that at least somewhere young adolescents are allowed to play a sport for the mere joy of playing the sport. Rock on, Hawaiian mentality!
*…but how do these new doughnuts compare with the recently-tried-and-praised Fractured Prune variety, pray tell?
*…so did you ever actually find Julia amidst all those tents? Inquiring minds want to know!
    * Now that’s my kinda dinner: chicken, corn…and more corn. 🙂 Great find – yea, navigator Lloyd!

*The Komoda donuts were raised dough. The Fractured Prune are cake. They can’t be compared. They both make my mouth water just thinking about them. Mmmm…

*I had meant to say that I did not find Julia. I am adding it to the post above for the sake of the memory archive.

*gasp* Donuts on a stick. My whole world view has just shifted, and for the better! Oh, my. When and if our bakery re-opens, I’m going there with skewers!

Hooray for the chicken! Are they really just open Wednesdays and Saturdays?

      …..on a steek.

They didn’t have any “hours of operation” signs. They just had a folding banquet table under a portable awning with a little cash box.

Donut shish-kabobs! Genius! I’m going to get some donut holes today & make some for the big game. Go Ravens!

And Yay for food & fun! I wish they had chicken carts here….your chicken does indeed look delicious.

“I walked to the beach”….I’m smiling……did you notice any cool shells?

    • Brad

I look for cool shells and other things while walking on the beach, but I haven’t seen anything so far.

It was my first time using Yelp. It will not be my last.
