A Two Hundred Dollar Haircut

I’m in the middle of a four-day weekend. I think it’s being called “Winter Break” or something. I didn’t want four whole days to pass without doing something unusual, and getting caught up on schoolwork was definitely out.

I decided to get a hotel through Priceline and stay overnight. It really was all about the hotel. I LOVE staying in hotels. At first I was going to do Baltimore, but then I thought maybe I should stay in Washington DC. Then I thought, why not New York? Priceline has you choose an area within the city you’re considering. In selecting a specific location, Times Square was a recognizeable area. I mean, I’ve heard of the “Upper East Side”, but I don’t really know what that means. So Times Square it was. A $100 offer was immediately accepted.

I talked Denis into stopping studying for a while so he could come with me. He is, after all, my New York sherpa-guide. He even knows what “Upper East Side” means.

The hotel was the Crowne Plaza Times Square. It was awesome! It was right in the middle of everything, and was clean and gorgeous. The only drawback was frighteningly fast elevators. I kept thinking we’d shoot through the roof or something.

In the picture below, the brown awning over the trees covered with lights is the Crowne Plaza. There was a Hershey store right next door (see the Twizzler sign) and an M&M store across the street.
8:20am Saturday

Since we were right on Broadway, we went to that place where you can stand in line to get cheap theater tickets. I had seen a sign on a bus advertising a show called “Curtains” that had David Hyde-Pierce in it, so we got tickets for that. At half price. Awesome!

The show was great! We were like 30 yards away from the stage. It was really funny and very entertaining. I loved the dance numbers. Very complicated.

If I took my camera out inside the theater, I risked arrest and execution.

And since I was in New York, I went back to the place I had gotten my hair cut at Thanksgiving. The same guy cut my hair. I was SO much more confident in his skills than in the mall chick from my last haircut. He ended up cutting off quite a bit of hair, but he was doing something specific, so I didn’t mind so much. He styled it kind of forward like Julius Caesar hair. What I really liked was the curl in the front. I thought it was hilarious. It was too bad that I did this on the way out of town. I didn’t get to show it off much.

Will I continue to style it this way?

And in perhaps an interesting bit of irony, my only souvenir was a mug. But I had to get it, because I am drinking coffee with some regularity now, and I’ve been using a regular-sized mug, which is just too small. And it’s an Oreo trivia mug, so it’s kind of boring-looking. The mug I got is GIANT! It holds 18 ounces. AND it’s a Superman mug!

I'm using my head for scale. It's that big!

So all-told, I spent about two hundred dollars. And all I have to show for it is a mug and a haircut.

…I think I’ll do this again next month. Hehe!

AWESOME! $100 for the Crowne Plaza at Times Square!?? That’s spectacular… way to go. I’m too much of a control freak to do priceline… my loss!

Love the haircut; I challenge you to get the curl in during your “normal” life! Ha!

You also have your ticket stubs and playbill to show for it, dontcha??

  2. Lauren

I took the photo tour of your hotel. It’s beautiful and I hate you. Did you get any candy from the Hershey store? I hate you. I bet the musical was knock-out awesome I hate you. I hate you.

    Denis, too.

  3. Beth

Yea…Lauren said it. I hate you and your glamorous life.
I gave two kids a bath, changed a few diapers and watched some TV this weekend. No glamour.

But, I suppose I’m glad you had fun.

    • Michele

That’s what good sisters do Beth – they try hard to be happy when their brothers experience joy and happiness. It’s a hard job, but we have to suck it up and do it!
Brother Brad – I too am happy for you, but secretly in my jealous head I am giving you the finger!

      • Lauren

Yeah, but good brothers offer to take their sisters and friends along for a fabulous weekend, all expenses paid, of course.

        • Beth

          Amen.

Can you feel the hate … the hate all around you?

Reading you saw a show kicked my hatred up a notch … so I agree with Lauren. For your next adventure you should invite others to share in the fun.

Too funny Peggy – you nailed that one! I used to love eating at Bob’s Big Boy restaurant. That new “do” is definitely a cross between Julius Caesar and Big Boy!! He, he – now I can’t wait to see it in person. Keep the big curl Brad!

To the rest of the girls basketball fans – see you at the game! Go Lady Saints!

  8. Peggy

take that 1st one out if you can … Big boy

  9. Karla

Thank you for letting us (me) live vicariously through you. I too spent $200 – on a new office chair for Arron to use as he works at the computer, since the other chair was bad for his back… That after he threw up on me on Valentine’s Day.

Next time take me with you and the rest of the gang – I’m begging you!!

    • Lauren

Aw, Valentine’s Day barf – a gift from the heart….er, stomach. He must really love you!

  10. Carol

Well, you know what the ol’ Caesar used to say:

    “Veni…vidi…capilli deputavi!”

(Knowing what you got for Christmas, I’ve no doubt this one will be translated speedily. Others may send a SASE to…)

UPDATE: Our Lady Saints are the IAMM C Conference Champions!!! Awesome game!!! Let’s Go Saints!
